Whatup FFamily!

It's been a bit breezy in Los Angeles... 42 degrees in fact... but that's nothing compared to the weather out in New Jersey... Our homie Daiji told us that it dumped 12inches of snow a couple of days ago! Daaayam...

Well anywayz, today is an interview on Daiji. I first became familiar with Daiji through graffiti. It's crazy, he'd be all the way out in the east coast, but I'd catch his artwork on freights over here in Los Angeles. He's one of the dopest artists we know, burning walls and flexing his graphic skills on the computer. He just started GlossBlack.org, a site providing artwork for those looking to get their money's worth. Here's what D has to say:

FF: Sup big D, can you introduce yourself to world? What's your profession/title?

D: First of all, I don't think I deserve an interview but I'll do you a solid. I'm Daiji, one half of Gloss Black. I'm a professional daydreamer and sometimes I try to do creative stuff for money, hahaha.

FF: Do you like New Jersey? Why the East Coast?

D: Yeah, now I love NJ. I used to hate it when I was younger though. But now, it's perfect because I'm getting older and boring. The East Coast is... just better (mad hate mail).

FF: Oh wor~d? Grrrr

FF: Why art?

D: Because girls love broke, creative types...?

FF: Wor~d.

FF: What makes your designs unique?

D: I like creating things without going straight to the computer. I draw on paper first, and I try to avoid the computer as part of the design process as much as possible. My concepts aren't exactly mind blowing, so creating designs by hand is what keeps them unique.

FF: Tell us one of your horror stories you've experienced with design jobs.

D: When I was young (mentally) and didn't know better, I did designs for these people who offered me "exposure" for lesser or no pay. Then they just jacked my shit and flipped them into some corny tshirt designs. Didn't see a penny. Real good dudes...

FF: Why haven't you updated Red Octopus? Where is Red Octopus!?

D: I'm not doing the solo thing for now so Red Octopus is dead. Chopped that dude up and threw him in some お好み焼き(okonomiyaki).

FF: What is your favorite food?

D: Anything that tastes good, cooked by an attractive woman. Holla!!

FF: Favorite color?

D: Right now? I think orange.

FF: Any tips and pointers you can give to all the kids that are looking to become a designer?

D: I'm not old enough to be giving out wisdom but, don't forget to have fun!!

FF: Shout outs please!

Hello FFamily!
Hope everyone had a nice weekend!

While it's snowing like crazy in New York, Los Angeles weather has been amazing. We got a chance to drive down to East LA, to meet up with fellow fashion designer, Diana Ra. Foreign Family is familiar to fashion when it comes to printing on t-shirts... that's not exactly what Diana does. She is the creative director for SNT Workshop, a contemporary women's brand from Los Angeles, known for their edgy designs and distinct tailored styles. We had a glimpse into women's fashion, and saw a different perspective of the industry other than streetware. Peep:

FF: Hi Diana, can you introduce yourself to world? What's your profession/title?

Diana: Designer, creative director, partner - SNT workshop

FF: What's the story about SNT?

Diana: The story is actually pretty simple. My partner Glenn and I wanted to start a line and immediately knew we wanted it to be a tailored/or tailored-inspired line. My experience in fashion has mostly been in wovens and Glenn's a tailor by trade so that was the easiest part. Everything after that was pretty simple too because it was just everything we both love. We wanted the line to feel androgynous..very menswear inspired....sexy but subtle and maybe like something you'd find in a "small tailor shop on Savile row in 1960s London" sort of thing...but then modernized with Japanese influenced bodies / silhouettes...I don't know... Maybe thats not so simple. I dont know if we're there yet but we're definitely working on it.

FF: Why fashion?

Diana: I have this quote on our design wall and it says "fashion, sex and rock and roll" .For me, it's "fashion, love and hip hop". I can't think of anything else I could possibly do.

FF: What makes your designs unique?

Diana: SNTs unique because it has a collaboration of 2 worlds. I was born in 1981 and Glenn started his first line in 1981. I listen to hip hop and he listens to "old" rock. We come from 2 very diff worlds, but we have 1 vision when it comes to SNT and I think the mix makes it unique.

FF: Tell us one of your horror stories of fashion... what have you experienced.

Diana: I haven't lived it long enough to consider anything horrific.

FF: You were once part of Foreign Family... why did you leave?

Diana: Foreign had just barely started when I was a part of it...and I wanted to help launch the women's line...but like so many things in life...its about timing...and the timing wasn't right.

FF: What is your favorite food?

Diana: Sushi

FF: Favorite color?

Diana: Black. All black everything.

FF: Any tips and pointers you can give to all the kids that are looking to beome a fashion designer?

Diana: Dress the part. and then do insane work.

FF: Shout outs please!

Whatup FFam.
Hope everyone is taking their vitamin C's and staying warm! On this rainy day, I decided to go walk over to Nima's office right across the street from ours. If you don't know Nima, he's the owner of a little online boutique called Digital Gravel. He's been supporting FF since day one. Thanks buddy. Here's some questions I got to ask young Neems, enjoy the super quick answers:

FF: Hey Neems. What shop do you represent, where are you located and what is your role at the shop?

Nima: DigitalGravel.com, Los Angeles, The Gawd.

FF: So you are a boss?

Nima: More like a Bewss. ('Boss' in the boss dialect)

FF: How may years have you guys been in business?

Nima: Ten more than most.

FF: what were you doing before you opened the shop?

Nima: Being 19.

FF: How's your business different from other online businesses?

Nima: We'd be around if the others weren't. Not the other way around.

FF: What makes your shop unique from the rest of the shops out there in the world?

Nima: I'd shop from me.

FF: What is your normal work week like?

Nima: Husserroo.('Hustle' in the boss dialect)

FF: What do you do for fun on the weekends to relax and have fun? Any hobbies?

Nima: Hang out with you.

FF: How are the lady friends?

Nima: Surprisingly friendly.

FF: Where do you see DG in 2010?

Nima: Back.

FF: Why do you carry FF? What makes us different?

Nima: You are good people. That's different.

Today we'd like to introduce our Australia account: Halfsleeve! It always amazes us that someone outside of the US, or even Los Angeles, is rocking FF gear. It's a great feeling! We asked Teik, the owner of Halfsleeve some questions. ENJOY:

FF: Hey what’s going on Teik, just want to say thanks for taking the time out to do this interview with the FFam. Ok, so lets get started on this. What shop do you represent, where are you located and what is your role at the shop?

HS: HALFSLEEVE – Select clothing and Lifestyle Shop. We’re located in Surry Hills, Sydney Australia. I’m Teik, the owner.

FF: How may years have you guys been in business?

HS: We opened our doors just before last Christmas, so we’re coming up on our 1 Year Anniversary next week.

FF: Congrats!!

FF: what were you doing before you opened the shop?

HS: I’ve been working retail in local street/skate shops in Sydney since high school. I worked retail in Japan for a while a few years back, then me and two of my mates from Japan decided to have a dig at it ourselves.

FF: For anyone who’s new to selling to the AU, please explain your season and how they are different from us in the states?

HS: Well basically, we’re the total opposite of you guys. So when you guys are rockin hectic goose feather down jackets, we’re in shorts and singlets and vice versa. You guys get snow this time of year, we head to the beach. You get the idea. So in terms of buying, if we wanna drop the fresh shit from the States or Japan as soon as it drops, we can only buy a range that will translate over here. Kinda sucks balls, but so does a stick in the eye I guess.

FF: What makes your shop unique from the rest of the shops out there in the world?

HS: I guess we separate ourselves by not overloading on brands, doing brands that we like and believe in, and by our attitude toward our customers. I’m really proud that we’ve managed to create an atmosphere at the shop that doesn’t exclude anyone – you don’t have to be versed in the latest ‘streetwear’ to be able to cop something here.

FF: What is your normal work week like?

HS: Well we’re open 7 days a week. Open late, close later. At this stage, my life revolves around the shop – loving every minute though.

FF: What do you do for fun on the weekends to relax and have fun? Any hobbies?

HS: After hours is another story all together. I guess being in the shop all day, everyday, you get thirsty for something different to do at night, amongst other things. So the crew try to get out and grab a feed together, a drink or ten, hit up a show or basically whatever gets our minds of the shop for a bit – shit usually ends up getting pretty loose yo.

FF: What is the situation like with the ladies? Please explain in detail for the dudes reading this, what type of girls are out in the AU. (are they fine)

HS: We got Miranda Kerr baby! Nuff said.

FF: Being in the Au, what are you guys really proud about? For us in LA I'm really proud about El Taurino and King Taco, 2 really good tacos spots..

HS: Around here, no one really takes themselves too seriously – which is a good thing I think. Be it fashion, or anything else - everyone’s able to take the piss outta themselves which keeps shit grounded. I’m proud of that.

FF: Crime is getting to become kinda crazy in the AU, please explain about the gang and drug crime situation poppin off in Australia, cuz everyone automatically thinks about the outback, koalas, and kangaroos and boomerangs when you talk about Australia.

HS: Well we don’t have ‘Crip niggas, Blood niggas, Esse’s, Asians, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, White Boys, Jamaicans, Latin Kings, Disciples, Vicelords, or Hatians’ (as your boy The Game put so eloquently), but we do have some bad dudes. Most of them lay low and just collect protection money, but once in a while you do see a massive brawl here or there. Oh yeah, and we got the bikies – you don’t wanna fuck with them. They run most of the drugs, clubs, brothels and have their fingers in pretty much all the pies. The stuff you would have heard about in the news is the bikie gangland war stuff down in Melbourne.

FF: What's the new shit people are into right now in the AU?

HS: We’re fast approaching the summer music festival season now. Every year there’s a few more festivals popping up here and there. Dudes are into their festivals (insert pic of sweaty drugfucked dude in multi coloured 2XL singlet, short shorts and canvas shoes) – not everyone’s idea of fun, but whatever floats your boat hey. Bikes are making a come back I guess. The Sydney fixed scene is picking up now, but Melbourne have been doing it big for a while now. Fashion wise, most people are looking to dress it down this year, oxford shirts, plain or simple graph tees and vans seem to be the go for summer.

FF: Why do you carry FF and what does FF bring to the table that you think other brands don’t bring?

HS: Besides you guys always bringing the heat, I guess we see a bit of ourselves in you guys. Not that we’re comparable at this stage, but we really like how you guys started, and have kept your growth constant without selling out.

FF: Last but not least the shout outs……………
